Xi Jinping on Monday reiterated China’s proposal of “one country, two systems” for Taiwan As Beijing wrapped up its 14th National People’s Congress (NPC).

What Happened: The Chinese President, in his speech, emphasized that Beijing must firmly promote the practice of “one country, two systems” and the great cause of the reunification of the motherland, state-owned media Xinhua reported.

The Chinese leader stressed that his country would oppose any moves towards independence in the democratic island and promote the “one country, two systems” concept and the need for the “reunification of the motherland.”

On Friday, Xi was voted Chinese President for the third term after nearly 3,000 members of China’s rubber-stamp parliament voted unanimously in the Great Hall in an election without any other candidate.

Following Xi’s rise to power, his loyal aide Li Qiang got the nod as China’s new premier replacing the outgoing Li Keqiang – who was seen as close to former President Hu Jintao.

The two nations have long indulged in political differences as Xi and his government claim the island nation as its own territory, whereas the democratically appointed Taiwanese government rejects its sovereignty claims.

China has often offered Taiwan a “one country, two systems” model, similar to that of Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to China in 1997.

Over the past year, Beijing has massively ramped up military and political pressure to try and get Taipei to accept Beijing’s sovereignty, including staging war games near the island and warplanes into Taiwan’s air defense zone.
